Harmony Community Church History
Harmony Community Church (formerly known as Howard Chapel AME Church) was established on the first Sunday in April, 1991 under the leadership of Rev James Brooks. The church was located at 1702 W. 14th Place in Chicago IL. The original members described the church building as a small frame white house with frail floors.
In 1994, God in his divine guidance led the church to its new building at 1815 West Roosevelt Road. It was there that the membership grew immensely and became a beacon in the community,
In 1998, the church’s property was purchased through eminent domain for the University of Illinois Medical campus expansion project. Although this was a time of uncertainty, it was also a time of great faith in trusting that God would lead the church to their next location.
On the second Sunday of April, 1999, the congregation marched into its new and current location at 1908 South Millard Avenue, where they immediately adopted the new name, Harmony Community Baptist Church. Under the leadership of Rev. James Brooks, the congregation continue to grow spiritually and established a food pantry that serviced many in the community.
In 2008, Pastor James Brooks retired and passed the torch on to his son, Rev James L. Brooks, who the congregation unanimously voted to become the Senior Pastor.
Harmony Community Church is grateful to God for God’s many blessings and is encouraged by the Motto: “Loving and Serving like Christ”
